Wellspring Warrior Poems

These two are bardic poems I wrote for Wellspring 2007. I won two of the categories that year, Archery and Bardic Talents.  This is the one I actually submitted and read:

One damp day late in May, there came a mighty sound.
A horn did blow to let us know to gather warriors round.
Across the field a mighty staff demanded I be brave,
But once the stone did hit the peg I feared not knight nor knave.

The first to start upon the hill I quickly went my way
The racers came both fleet and fast, my shutter saved the day.
Then upon the stage despite the rain I stood both strong and true
Through some skill I took my aim and the victory I knew.

A challenge set I did my best to keep this woman’s shine,
With a stone toss the men did see that a woman’s rage was fine.
I persevered through all the doubt and raised my boulder high,
And though I did not win the sport this warrior did try.

One round in circle I took my seat to cheer my fellows through,
My next two rounds I showed the truth, there are women warriors too!
The last round ended as the first, but I do not feel I failed;
For though I now walk with a limp, I did not break a nail!’

Here is the uncut version:

One damp day late in May there came a mighty sound
A horn did blow to let us know to gather warriors round
Across the field a mighty staff demanded I be brave
But once the stone did hit the peg I feared not knight nor knave.

A storyteller then needed leave to show the groves his craft
So across the road the guild did line to prove that they were fast.
The first to start upon the hill I quickly went my way
The racers came both fleet and fast, my shutter saved the day.

Then upon the stage despite the rain I stood both strong and true
Through some small skill I took my aim and victory I knew.

A challenge set I did my best to keep this womans shine
With a stone toss the men did see a woman’s rage was fine.
I persevered through all the doubt and raised my boulder high,
And though I did not win the sport this warrior did try.

The guild was summoned from their games to aid a lady’s call
A maiden fair and I did share the task to prepare the hall.

That was done so back to our fun where we laid the circle down.
One round in I took my leave to cheer my fellows through
My next 2 rounds I showed the truth, there are women warriors too.

The last round ended as the first but I do not feel I failed,
For though I now walk with a limp, I did not break a nail!
