In June of 2010, Three Cranes Grove, ADF performed a Vedic rite at the local UU. I was assigned the part of the Outdwellers. I began to do research on Indra and decided that I would follow the longer way of honoring, invoking, and then guarding of the way. I began with reciting a portion of the Rig Veda, wrote an invocation to Indra, and then wrote an invocation to the Outdwellers. The folk were standing at the crossroads for a while but, in my opinion, the ways were guarded exceptionally well and the omens were fantastic. 🙂
Included below is the entire recitation:
1. All sacred songs have magnified Indra expansive as the sea. The best of warriors borne on cars, the Lord, the very Lord of strength.
2. Strong in thy friendship, Indra, Lord of power and might, we have no fear. We glorify with praises thee, the never conquered conqueror.
3. The gifts of Indra from of old, his savings succors, never fail. When to the praise-singers he gives the boon of substance rich in kine.
4. Crusher of forts, the young, the wise, of strength unmeasured, was he born. Sustainer of each sacred rite, Indra the thunderer, much-extolled.
5. Lord of the thunder, though didst burst the cave of Vala rich in cows. The gods came pressing to thy side, and free from terror, aided thee.
6. I, hero, through thy bounties am come to the flood addressing thee. Song-lover, here the singers stand and testify to thee thereof.
7. The wily Susna, Indra! Thou o’erthrewest with thy wondrous powers. The wise beheld this deed of thine: now go beyond their eulogies.
8. Our songs of praise have glorified Indra who ruleth by his might. Whose precious gifts in thousands come, yea, even more abundantly.
– Rig Veda, Book 1 Hymn XI
Invocation:
Indra!
Defeater of dragons and demons
You are the deliverer and advocator
You are the strength of the people
You hold asunder the heavens and the earth as the axle of the realms
You are the steadier of earth and the mountains
Warrior! You are our wall of armor against those forces that seek to pull us from our work
Stand for us, the children of the earth as our watcher
Wield your might in our defense and hold fast as our protector
Indra! Accept our offering.
Outdwellers:
Spirits of chaos, distractions of mind, body, and spirit
Seekers of strife, spoilers, beings at cross-purposes with those gathered here,
Hear Me!
I have called upon Indra, the great warrior,
With him I stand between you and the folk present today
Take heed these words and leave us be.
For your sport here is unwelcome
Accept this token, go far from this place, and trouble us no more.
